Little Things Mean a Lot
“Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?” 1 Corinthians 5:6 NASB
“What in the world happened here?”
I bellowed this question as the timer went off in the kitchen. Peering into the rotating mixing bowl on the counter, I expected to see egg whites transformed into flawless mounds of cottony goodness. Instead, I found a bowl full of runny batter whirring around the beaters. I was dumbfounded because I had whipped egg whites numerous times without any trouble.
I discovered that I had contaminated this batch of egg whites with just a smidge of egg yolk. The tiniest hint of yolk can keep egg whites from reaching their stiff peak pinnacle and becoming useless goo instead. I wished I could remove the yolk and save my recipe, but that was impossible.
We sometimes feel like this weight loss journey we are on is just such an impossible task because we make tiny little decisions that can throw us off the rails. We ride on the slippery slope of that one mistake we keep making again, and again that throws our weight loss goals into disarray. Or in another scenario, we start to feel so confident in our own abilities that we slack on things like tracking our food or skipping our workouts. Thinking wrongly, the “just this one time” won’t hurt. But that’s just not so.
Those little things mean a lot. They add up. So what do we do? We must rely on Jesus to help us. Nothing is beyond His power. When you feel weak, He makes us stronger. When you fail, He picks us back up. The disciples asked Jesus, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus answered, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:25). No matter how many times we drop yolk in our egg whites, whether it’s a difficult choice we need to make or an outright failure, God cleans up our messy goo and creates the perfect recipe for our lives.
